1951 Lionel Train Set ALCO Diesel
Posted by Anonymous on Wednesday, May 17, 2006 11:12 AM
I have what is left of my 1951 Lionel trains. They were recently discovered by a boyhood friend to whom I loaned them many years ago in the attic of his grandmother when she passed away. I disassembled them to nearly the very last screw , cleaned them up and have all of them running like a top again.

My question is, do I have the entire set?

I have a 2023 ALCO diesel set, both operating and non-operating units, in Union Pacific livery, armour yellow and grey; a Lionel 6656 stock car in yellow; a Lehigh Valley 6456 hopper in boxcar red, and a Lionel SP 6357 caboose in dark red. I also have a 1033 transformer. I suspect my father bought these for me as a set.

Does anyone know if these items came as a set, and, if so, do I have all of it? I do know for almost certain that I received these on Christmas of 1951.

Thanks

I do not have my listings handy at the moment, but my older brothers received that set (before I was born), and at least one more car was included.

looks like this is the one you are missing:

6465, probably Type II.

It appears the set is 1467W - type I. The type II set was the silver Union Pacific ALCOs.

Not to go off-subject, but I have the Williams 2023 repros in silver. I also recently bought a Williams B&A State of Maine box car and was a little surprised to see that those stamped truck frames in the photo above were reproduced exactly.

FYI most of those UP tank cars show up often on ebay for little money.

you'll pay more for the shipping than you will for the car.

The Sunoco double dome tank car was included in most of the postwar freight sets roughly from about 1947 to 1955. They are very common at train shows.
