What's the formula for 1/48 scale feet to 1:1 feet?

I've got an 8 foot girder span that appears to need a support in the middle for cosmetic reasons. However, I've seen girder spans about 400 feet from end to end. Can anyone tell me how many feet in 1:1 my 1:48 girder is?

1 foot in O-Scale is 48 feet in the prototype.

8 feet x 48 feet = 384 feet.

Your girder bridge is just like the prototype (looks cool, too!).

As Chris has stated, 384 scale feet.

1/4" = 1scale foot

Yep, right on the money. 1"=4' in o scale.

Gee, that's a real easy forumula: just multiply your feet by 48! (my daughter is majoring in math in college so I must have a recessive math gene somewhere in my DNA)[:D]

I was casting about on the Web this morning to inquire into the bridge style I have, which is a box girder. I found a report that box girders are structurally better than I beams and that they are typically 10 to 200 meters. Since my span is 384 feet, it falls well within the parameters of the prototype and I may not put in a center column, which would anyway, just be cosmetic treatment.
