I'm partial to the thump-a-thump-a-thump of the air compressor on my Western HobbyCraft trollies.

The sound of the pantagraphs as they glide under the messenger wire as it zooms along.

A Lionel air whistle, with the whistle voltage controlled from the transformer so that I can "bend" the sound.

Best sound effect- a nice low sounding whistle. My K-line has a great one.

Best Visual effect - Smoke coming out the stack.

And the combination of the two - Isnt that why everyone loves steam engines?

I enjoy the most .........the sound of first generation diesels , the EMDs versus the Alcoa engines . Of course this is just behind #1 , the exhaust of a working steam loco starting with a load . And of course the locos whistle / horn .....the locos voice ..

I have been not happy , with add on sound systems in my large scale diesels , because , I hear the real diesels rev up their engine somewhat BEFORE , they move .
And with the Lionel TMCC , I can rev up and then move the loco , just like the real ones sound , and cut it back a notch after the train is at speed , in the large scale trains , the sound stays high , and doesn't notch back untill you slow down .
But then I am picky from being around real trains a lot . Did I mention how much I really dislike the really bright cab lights that mfrs in all scales put in the loco cabs ? Have these people never been IN a locomotive cab at night ? Well the cab lights ARE NOT brighter than the headlights in a real loco .. Perhaps I am too picky about these two little pet peeves .
Run em if you got em !

ccgrc : You hit it right on the barrel head !! My layout is like a big test track is all, but great for a long trains & show someone new in the hobby, a pair of engines starting out with the RPMS up & then letting off ! They really like that ! Also, I like to raise the volume on the eng. as it comes closer ! Plus I have the command caboose that talks back to the eng & tower, etc.
Thanks,

For me on a "Classic" engine, I would have to say it's the whole package on my Triplex...from start-up to shutdown.

I also really enjoy the station announcements that came with my subway. It simulates all of the express stops that you would make on an express train from the Bronx down to lower Manhattan in NYC. It also simulate the doors opening and some of the "Troubleshooting" that you might hear between the motorman and conductor. It reminds me of going to work with my father as a kid and riding the train all day!

Mine is the chuff of the Hudson freight train and the smoke. My MTH Mohawk smoke is awesome and when it switches sounds to the click clack sound instead of the chuffing, it just sounds sweet.

Diesel: Lionel's TMCC controled horns. You can play a "tune" with the CAB1 horn button.

Steam: The chuffs of the engine as it is running slowly.

I agree with the Chief here. I love the horns on the TMCC diesels, I always make the RPMs higher or lower to create a song with the horn. Maybe I will make a CD with songs of a diesel horn and title it "Sounds of A Lionel Diesel Horn in TMCC"

I personally like any sound that is emitted from a steam locomotive. However nothing gets my blood going like hereing a lonesome steam whistle in the distance.

One would be the sound of a Hudson from deep down a ravine. Since I don't have my layout up and running, and since I am on "restriction" I would think that to hear my wife say "I like that engine" is my favorite sound, it means I am not in trouble for yet another purchase.

Admittedly it's a bit childish, but I love the sound of an engine with a long train 'burning out' when you slam the throttle all the way forward from a dead stop! I used to LOVE doing that when I was a kid and still indulge on occasion - when no one but my nepphew is looking. Of course, now I only do it with cheap trains instead of my pride & joy. [:p]

I bet I'm not the only one who still does that once in a while - but I might be the only one who'll admit it! [:D]
