Lionel comes to rescue during Arctic glacial explorations

During glacial research drilling in Greenland, a reamer, used to make holes in the glacier, became hopelessly lost and broken down deep inside the ice sheet.

Step in Lionel and its ole Railscope. Fortunately, one of the explorers was a longtime model RRer and knew about Lionel's modern technology.

The railscope was lowered into the hole and the reamer was monitored on B&W TV and this helped in its eventual recovery.

Still have my RailScopes--one in O gauge and one in Large Scale--along with the Lionel TV and the O gauge RailScope caboose. I haven't used them in some years, but really enjoyed them in the brief period when I did have RailScope connected to the layout (aside from the battery-eating aspects of the technology at the time). I've long believed that Lionel should have followed-up with improved versions that would recharge off of track power and provide color video.

Micro-Mark has a small color camera that can be mounted inside a car or locomotive. I don't have one myself but I would geuss they work alright.

Situation where one thing crosses paths with something else seemingly unrelated. I guess our hobby is everywhere! [:)] Take a look in a magazine called Nuts and Volts, there are quite a few companies now selling mini cameras and transmitters. B&W, color, infrared and even color infrared!
