What OS? There are a variety of products available for windows, e.g. RR Track. There are a few for OS-X;

$79.00 seems a bit pricey..but maybe not..

I thought I read somewhere, either in Model Railroader or online somewhere, that there was a freeware version of this type of software..was I incorrect?

The atlas verision is a scaled down set of the rr-track software. it only includes the basic track profiles for the atlas brand. It is pretty straight forward to download and will give you an idea of the benefit of such a software product. There are few accessories images and footprints included.

Good hand/eye contact, and you can create your track plan...albeit Atlas products. if you like it, then you can go for the rr-track and import your layout into the product, adjust as you need for the brands (lionel, ross, gragraves) you might be using.
