Lionel 9464 Boxcars

I was wondering if anybody had any experience with these boxcars. I know that the PS-1 series is very popular, however they are hard to come by and they sure are spendy. I also wonder how rugged the PS-1s are with the seperately detailed parts.

I really like my Lionel 6565 boxcars (same size as 6464), and was hoping that the 9464s had similiar feautres but in "Standard O" size.

Any comments would be appreciated. Thanks!

Welcome to the forum.
I can't find any mention of the 6565 anything in the Greenberg's Price guide, are you sure the numbers are correct? 6465's are tank cars.
As for the 9464's only one is mentioned, but no mention of O or 027. The only thing I can tell you about the 9464's is that it is newer than the 6464's.
One more thing about the 6464's, there are two runs of them, post-war and modern era,
I like the post-war stuff better, to me it has more quality.

The postwar boxcars were the "6464-series", but the modern boxcars are the "9400-series" (1978-1986). Only one of these cars has the 9464 number.

The 9400-series cars were considered "Classic" in that they were the same size as 6464 cars (10-1/4" long). Others included the 9220-series (1970-72) and the 9700-series (1972-78). One difference between the postwar and modern boxcars is the absence of rivets (makes application of lettering easier).

Standard O (scale dimensioned) boxcars are a little longer (11 inches) and have a separate catwalk.
