022 switch controller bulbs, repros are lame
Posted by msacco on Sunday, March 5, 2006 12:11 PM
Okay can someone tell me the deal with these. I have some original bulbs but the paint/finish on them is cracked. I go to a train show today and get repros and they[re really opaque. IN fact the green is so dark that it doesn't really light up at all.
Does anyone make replacement lamps with the original transparent finish, or do I dare try to make my own?

thanks,
Mike S.

Mike - just a thought - search this forum for "LED Replacement Bulbs" about a week ago somebody had an article about them and it seems they might just be the thing to get away from bad or shoddy repro items...I'm gonna try them when I get back into the toy train operating business...

Try Town & Country Hobbies http://www.towncountryhobbies.com/ for your choice of the clear(Group A) or opaque painted(Group B) bulbs.

I've had good luck painting clear bulbs red & green with fabric paint - the type meant for clothes intending to be washed & dried. I dip them while "on" to speed up the drying.

I've had marginal luck using glass stain on clear bulbs for the clear look you want. It works, but the stain I use requires several repeat applications.
