The Schnabel Flatcar
Posted by Anonymous on Friday, February 17, 2006 9:29 PM
I just bought this car earlier today from my hobby shop, and its quite a flatcar (runs on O-54 curves or greater). It was sitting on top of a Pepsi pop machine for quite sometime from my last few visits to the shop. Took it out of the box and it stretches pretty long too. I really like this car. This car is the MTH 20-98291 model which I believe was in last year's catalog. Im not sure if these type cars are still available, but another one would look great for a flatcar consist, since I also have the two depressed 4-truck flatcars along with the Conrail 5-car spine set.

Not sure if anyone own the schnabel car, but if one has the space for it curve-wise, it looks quite good on the layout.

Awesome pics there on that site csxt! Never realized the size of those cars were in actual use on railroads. I may plan to buy more of these cars soon when I find them. I will work on posting a pic of the one I have later this weekend.

The only Schnabel, if they're spelled the same, I'm familiar with is a type of rifle stock. It has a "knob" on the front and extends the full length of the barrel.

John, after looking at the photos I vauguely (sp?) remember seeing something similar, smaller, years ago in NJ with a section of a distillation tower. Probably headed for one of the Jersey refineries. I've had equipment delivered on, I guess, the trucking version where the load is supported on each end with a section of trailer, dolly, with no connection between the two carriers other than the load and electical and hydraulic lines.

If I remember right, this past summer, someone had posted another sight for this car showing it in Minn. or somewhere. I will search for that today.
Thanks, John
