K-Line Amtrak F40PH Diesel Engine
Posted by Buckeye Riveter on Wednesday, January 18, 2006 9:53 PM
Anybody know how good or bad the following engine from K-Line might be:

Amtrak F40PH Diesel Engine with Lionel Railsounds, TMCC.

I have one K-Line Steam Engine and it has been an excellent runner, but have had no experience with their diesels.

Hi Buck, not sure if you are talking about this one on Ebay.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=6029509982&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&rd=1

It looks nice, though the bid on this one strikes me as a bit high. I have one K-line diesel, and I'm having trouble with it, but it could just be my layout.

Hi Buck,
I have 2 steamers and a GP 38 UP I bought on Ebay . The diesel is one of my best runners and really pours out the smoke , for a Diesel. Hope this helps...Tim

Big Boy, saw that on EBAY, and it looks a little pricey compared to past auctions of similar engines. I have my eye on another one.

Thanks, Tim. Appreciate the info.

My only K-Line is the Mikado. No problem with the TMCC, but the plunger that pushes the smoke out of the stack sticks. Specifically the spring that pushes the plunger down after blowing the smoke out the stack does not have enough force to overcome the tapered walls of the cylinder. I'm going to add a small plastic washer to the top of the cylinder, shortening the travel of the spring and therefore increasing the force on the plunger to return to the bottom of the cylinder.

And for those interested, TAS Smoke Units do not fit inside the K-Line Mikado.[:(]

Why there just happens to be a review of the K-Line Caltrain F40 in the March 2006 issue of CTT (p.86) and there's a video of the F40 on this very website!

Hi,
I have the K-Line Amtrak F-40, it is a great engine enjoy it very much. I bought it from one of the advertising vendors in CTT mag. Paid $275. was not able to find one in my area. I am not sure what a fair price would be but I really wanted it. Hope this helps

I have the K Line F59PHi Amtrak loc. It runs great, and has very good pulling power. It pulls six lighted passenger cars with ease . I can't speak for the smoke generator, as I have never used it, for fear of setting off the smoke detectors in the basement. Railsound is good, although not up to Lionel's current 5.0 version.
