What was I thinking?!?

B. Don't like it / don't want it / wondered why you ever DID buy it? [banghead]

Well, I had an A & B moment the other day going through my collection when I came across a (still new, in the shipping box) Williams GP-9 in the purple ACL paint scheme.

I don't remember ever buying it. Sure, I love Williams trains and have several, but why ACL? I am not a big fan of the line and I dislike the color purple, especially on trains. (I guess that's why I don't buy MTH Premier stuff [;)] ).

Anyway, I'm going to try to sell it, but I was wondering - have any of you done that with any of your train purchases?

An MTH searchlight car with three axle trucks - a beautiful car that's far too long for the layout curves - I was enraptured by the spinning light. Anybody want it? I've done a lot of dumb things in the hobby - like trading away all my N and HO scale in exchange for an MTH spinning airplane beacon - I was scammed by a now-gone hobby shop - but I was too anxious to get into our larger scale.

I only did that with a few books, you know you want the information, but don't read it right away and next thing you know, you're out and find this great book you already have. On the other hand, maybe it was a gift that you just did not remember, Yeah, that's it, it wasn't you, someone else bought it for you. That's the ticket!

I know what is worse. Buying two of the same item. A few years ago I bought several pieces of the same rolling stock. I now have a excel inventory sheet and it does not happen now. I remember they were Kline aluminum hopper cars and Lionel cars. I bought the items once and then they went on sale and I bought them again. When I realized my mistake I called to return the items but the shipping and restocking fee were almost 40% of the purchase price. Someone on Ebay got a good deal I sold the extras with no reserve. Also another problem is buying an Engine and never testing it or taking it out of the box. I know some people who never test run their new engines. One guy waited for 2 years to take the engine out of the box. They just buy them and keep them in the boxes. Sometimes there are broken plastic pieces and the engines may have electrical problems with them. Remember there is a 1-year warranty on Lionel and atlas products.

You guys are lucky you can say you only bought one such item. When I do inventory, I have lots of "what was I thinking?" pieces. Guess I am just an impulse buyer.

K-Line reeefer with all the little bananas that hang on this little grid. Have to be careful to not touch it too ahrd aor they fall and parts fall of the whole car. Lots of glue.

A friend sent me a diecast GG1 which doesn't quite fit in on the Santa Fe (it is missing pantos but runs fine). I may convert it into a snowplow, as it is very heavy & can ram thru snow. It is Williams or Lionel, I forget. I'd consider a trade at this point. It's Conrail.

Guess I haven't been in the game long enough. I haven't done it with this hobby, but I have done it in the past. It's probably just a matter of time for me.
