Combining different types of track
Posted by crip on Sunday, January 15, 2006 12:28 PM
I have alot of fastrack and O31 tube track, but not enough to build a double loop with spurs on the inside loop with one type of track, let alone trying to find fastrack O36 remote turnouts.I am thinking of making the outside loop with fastrack to run my MTH F3 passenger set and using O31 tube track on the inside loop with traditional cars and a few O22 turnouts for switching. Has anyone done this and does the two different track types of track look ok. I am not into running scale trains but more of the toy train type.

Will work if you put the height size roadbed under the tublor. I have, in the past, shimmed up with a gradual rise to the height of a taller track and left the lower height flat on the table [switching yard]. Saw a computer track plan yesterday where a guy is going to use Fastrack and Atlas. [:0]

Mixing tubular and Fastrack should not be a problem using the Fastrack adapter section. The O-31 should work well inside the O-36 Fastrack. You could get really crazy and add a loop of O-27 inside of the O-31!

If you have trouble finding an adapter section, just put the track as close as possible without rail joiners, secure the track to the roadbed, and then solder wires to each rail where the flange won't bump it.

If the tracks are different heights, just shim the track up by placing something under the track or rails or roadbed to match the height.
