Hi!. I called the Lionel Tech Support and didn't exactly get a satisfying answer.
I asked, if I had two separate O27 lines running across a highway, could my Crossing Gate be hooked up to operate whenever either of the trains approached the same crossing? They told me that the gate could only operate when attached to the 153C contactor that came with the gate or purchase the 153IR controller but in no way could one gate be operated on multiple lines. Having better than 50 years experience with HO and practically no experience with the O27 larger trains, I wondered. What if, I put a 153C contactor on each independent line and connected the second one, by wire, to the corresponding spring clips on the first. Guess what? It worked. Now, whenever a train from either or both lines nears the highway crossing, gate comes down. (Note: The power source for alll my accessories comes from one terminal on my bullet transformer) Now that you read this, I'm sure that you all knew this could be done but thanks for reading about my continuing discoveries about O27 operations.

Don't worry, you're not alone in thinking that the Lionel customer support is less than helpful.

Which crossing gate are you using?

Yes it is possible to do what you want, ie have either track trigger the crossing gate. Two contactors will work wired in parallel. Closing either one ends power to the gate.

The 153IR may be the easiest way. With proper positioning, it should be able to "see" across both tracks at the same time. It will stay activated as long as either or both trains are present.

Yes, the Lionel IR unit can be set to "see" across 2 tracks. The pressure-activated controller can lead to heartburn and cursing...may work today, but tommorrow??? Joe

Have you tried insulated sections of track on both lines? You could insulate a few sections on either side of the crossing and then you would have more realistic operation. The guys on this forum are great when it comes ideas and assistance. Dennis
