027 switches

I understand that O-27 is available in larger ccurves than 27". Is this using Lionel track? If so, how do you use the O-27 radius curve switches.

There is tubular track with curves larger or rather more gentle than ones found on standard 027 curves. I don't find it is v. common. As you might guess, most 027 switches start off on that standard curve - you can certainly attach the other curves but have to then plan accordingly. It would perhaps be wiser to begin the gentler curves off the straight side of the switch if it fits your track plan.

Lionel makes 027 in 42 inch diameter curves and has 42" path switches. You would use those switches if part of a 42" curve that you want to maintain. Other manufactures make larger diameter track and usually have switches to match that diameter. You could put an 027 switch on an end of a 42" diameter curve. It would make the radius change there. As long as you can stand the 27" diameter fine....... sort of like mixing diameters back when we were floor running..... you might need some unique partial length pieces to get the loops closed though............ 8-)

You can get O27 profile curves in 34, 42, 54, and 72-inch nominal diameters.

Here's a link to Lionel's online catalog, showing the types of O-27 trackage available from them:

CAUTION! Don't look at other pages of the catalog or you will be doomed![:D]

Marx made 027 profile track and switches in 034 radius for many years. They also had some straights that are a couple of inches longer than the 027 8 3/4 inch lengh.

This track and switches are available at some train shows and probably epay. I picked up some curves and switches a few years ago, a whole box for $10. I am planning on replacing some of the curves on my 027 layout as they are smoother running.
