Sound and older transformers
Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, December 27, 2005 2:00 PM
Greetings...

Sorry for the newb-type sound question [V]:

Given that I'm unlikely to see my in-for-service K-line transformer in the near term, I'll be running on a transformer with no "bell"... Is there anyway to trigger the bell (Auxillary trigger of some sort) on my K-line engine with RailSounds? If the transformer has neither whistle nor bell, is there a way to trigger each of them?

They make sound buttons that interrupt the track I think[%-)][%-)] I heard something about it in my Lionel TMCC C420 manual. Let me look for it and I will get back to you.

About $15 from your train supplier...It operates the bell perfectly! I believe if you series it with another unit, you can operate both whistle and bell. Can someone confirm the actual wiring of both units if used together?

Small Layouts are cool! Low post counts are even more cool! NO GRITS in my pot!!!

Here is one place to order it from

http://www.wmtlionelparts.com

I did notice that there site didn't have the price on it. [?] [?]

IT normally about $15.00 each

Just wire it in seires, red wire to transformer, black wire to center rail.

Whether the sound button activates the whistle or the bell is determined by the polarity. If your transformer only has a single button, you can have one or the other depending on how you wire the transformer to the track. I have also seen a device that will reverse the polarity of the wires to the track to allow you to use one button for both purposes. I can give you instructions for how to build your own with a few dollars worth of parts from Radio Shack if you would like.

You can also make one yourself. It's a few dollars and some work, but also works great.

Instead of whistle you should read bell.
The symbols are 6 amp single rectifiers which you can buy at radioshack or any electronic shop. By shorting 5 out of 6 rectifiers with the switch, you create the 3 volt difference any whistle or bell button does. (Lionelsony gave me this setup, and it works flawless). It works with old relay type horns and the modern electronically triggered ones.

Daan
It would also be a good idea to add a 10 amp fast blow in line fuse and a 36 volt bi directional zener diode across the transformer leads to protect modern electronics in engines. THese will offer both short and spike protection.

Pull up this pdf from the Lionel web site,
http://www.lionel.com/products/productnavigator/InstructionManuals/73-6789-250.pdf
and go to page 3. It shows how to wire the Sound Activation buttons in series to activate the whistle and the bell.

Just ordered a pair of Lionel sound activation switches from Brasseur. I very much appreciate the help.
