lionels command control question?

lionels command control question?

I just purchased command control and figuring its a little vague when it comes to certain things. like I had to call a store to get the cab talk to work because its not in there , or if it is I didnt see anything labeling it cab talk!! can you guys help a little telling me a few things like, uncoupling, it doesnt work the way they suggest in the book. is it just me or am i just not getting the sequence they give...? I'm going to sit and read again to insure i find it but also is there extra stuff this system will do thats not in the book or do i have to upgrade to DCS? thx for your help

Do you have a command engine? I have had TMCC for a year on the 25 Dec. With the engine, there should be a little "screen" that says the command. This comes w/ the engine, and is not another part. The coupler firing is activated by the R and F letters on the cab 1. For crew talk, this is the sequence: Aux1+ the number 2. For volume: aux1+ =1(volume up) volume down= aux1+4. RPM/startup= aux1+3, RPM down=aux1+6. Towercom= aux1+7. Smoke(on)=aux1+9, and smoke(off)=aux1+8. For shutdown sequence:aux1+5. Engine reset: aux1+0. Remember this is a diesel. The screen should be w/ the engine wrap, along w/ smoke fluid.

Hello Cade ! First, I wonder if you got the Command base & the powermaster & a Cab 1 ? You would need a transformer & a command base & a cab 1 to run in command. Let us know & others should be along later to help you. To run in conventional, you would need to add a powermaster.

Cade: I forgot to ask if you have a transformer? Hope you can get back to us & tell us what you have ! I started with just a transformer & base & cab 1, and added 2 powermasters later, one powermaster for each loop I have. Thanks again, John

Boy, this thread is a ringing endorsement for command control! Whether it is Lionel or MTH, WHY would anyone want to go to all of this trouble? Hit button 1 then the pound sign, then AUX, then F then enter the last 3 digits of your first wife's social security number, then AUX, then the roman numeral for the sum of your age in years and your best friend's sister's age in months, then AUX and turn the red knob two full revolutions counter clockwise while standing on one leg under a full moon on either the winter or summer solstice...

For the same reason that people use television remotes, cable TV boxes,
power windows and locks. Because they add functionality and/or fun
to the process of whatever device you're using. It's easier than it sounds.


It's more complex to cure a patient of their coronary syndrome by
angioplasty or stenting than to just let them die, or give them an aspirin, but we go ahead and go to the trouble nonetheless, to pick an extreme example of complex technology
that makes life better ;).

Thank You Neil ! I don't count myself as a Rocket scientist to operate TMCC !
I do plan to add DCS later, as I have both Lionel & MTH. Plus, CTT endorses both when they advertise . I like postwar, prewar, standard gauge & all the other scales & have friends in a lot of other scales too, but I don't cut them down !

It only took about one trip around the track for these kids to learn how to run, stop, sound the horn, and ring the bell with TMCC. The older ones have learned how to run the sounds and flip the switches. In fact, the young lady pictured switched engines in the middle of a seesion without any problems. The kids seem to think it is easy. The youngest that can run it is about 5 and he can control his engine really good. I just tell them it is a small computer and off they go!


For me the wiring of the layout is greatly simplified. NO TOGGLE SWITCHES like I have done before to isolate tracks. I have ran the MTH system, too and it is very easy to learn.

sorry getting back so late, took a trip. i have a transformer lw 125 watt & cab-1. couplers arent unhooking still but they worked at the train store when they cleaned everything.........?

Hi Neil (nblum), Merry Christmas to you too. I appreciate you trying to answer my question about why anyone would want to use the command control systems. Sounds like TMCC is more like doing the coronary artery bypass graft that using power windows or door locks.

Finally, let's say hi and Merry Christmas to Buckeye Riveter who provided a nice phorto and pointed out that even young kids can make command control work. I am envious of their command of command control!

Merry Christmas to you too Trevers Trains ! Yes, I understand what you're saying, that's right, these are toy trains, & I forget sometimes. I came out of 30 some years in R/C planes & Helis, can be very expensive. I was an instructor, test flew many of the guys new planes for their first flight, helped build, steer them in the right direction as what to buy & not buy. Some guys would have 2 to 3 thousand in one of these & would trust me to test fly it & get it back down safely. I was used to the seriousness of the hobby & surroundings for safety of people & property nearby. Yes, this hobby is not as serious as what I'm used to. I tend to forget & I thank You !!

Not that complicated. My nephew [10] got it in about one minute. I guess some are slower than others. I run both DCS and TMCC. I run the MTH engines with DCS remote and TMCC with CAB1. Easy to me. Some prefer to run them all with DSC remote. What ever is your preference.

SOMEBODY FORGOT TO MENTION THAT YOU NEED YOUR TRANFORMER ON AT LEAST 18 VOLTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! my mistake......oh well it works now.

Set your voltage at about 15-16 volts and you will extend bulb life plus passenger cars /caboose, etc, lights look better when not so bright.
Your couplers will fire okay at 15 volts.

I have the power house, but before I got that I ran my track at about that. My caboose light just burnt out yesterday.

I do heart surgery and still prefer to go conventional. I guess I like things simple when I get home. It seems relatively easy to work the two command systems, but I also have so much old postwar items, I don't want to bother. I have seen the command systems in action and quite frankly, the crew talk does nothing for me, but that is just my opinion and I won't put anyone else down for theirs.
