Extreme Makeover-Train Edition MTH V&T to a Clinchfield #1
Posted by scottsmith on Tuesday, December 20, 2005 8:06 PM
This is the engine I started with. Notice the smokestack is wrong for a Clinchfield #1 (The Clinchfield # 1 was in excursion service in the 60's 70's and is now in the B&O Museum in Baltimore). Another problem is that the Clinchfield was a Coal burner and the V&T is a wood burner.

TO change the wood load on the Railking engine I had to cover the wood load. I did this with two small brass plates and glued them into place with Liquid Nails.

I painted the tender black, then I covered the wood load with instant roadbed.

I pressed charcoal from my local pet store to create the coal load.

I made my own decal sheet using microsoft powerpoint.

I took the shell of the engine and removed the ballon smokestack. The MTH ballon smokestacks are a seperate add on piece but they are difficult to remove (hot water and muscle). I then cut a brass tube to fit in where my smokestack was. I cut vertical into the stack and creating brass tabs that could be bent to attach to the inside roof of the boiler.I attched the smokestack with Liquid Nails and hung it upside down to dry.

I painted the engine in several steps using masking for the different parts of the engine. I also added gold stripping to the engine and used white paint on the wheel rims.
Here is finished project:

I am simply amazed by you fellas who have guts to give engines "makeovers". I'm too chicken.

Man - that is too cool!

Did you print your new decals on special paper or something? I'd love to do something like this.

Jim,
Here is the best deal I have found on decal paper:
http://www.beldecal.com/
Unless you are printing in black to go aganist a white background you need to get the white decal paper or the decal won't be visiable.
