Foam sheets for mountains
Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, December 13, 2005 12:08 PM
Recently came across some old cushion foam used to pad a lounge chair
I decided to try to make a mountain with it , it was easy. I laid it over a wire frame and tacked down the ends. It was thin enough to contour the desired shape of a mountain, next I sprayed painted it and blended to colors. It was finished in 30 minutes and has a very realistic effect for far back ground scenery with out the mess of plaster of paris[^]

I would like to see that. Can you post a photo?

I would too. How does the paint stick to the outside of the foam without soaking it? I've tried cutting up foam pads from the innards of old chairs because they made such rock-and-hill-like shapes but they would absorb spray paint - leaving a weird tannish foam-looking outside and a dark innard.

Doug, thanks for asking! I too was wondering. I've never heard of anyone doing this.

I have created home-made course ground foam by putting chunks of foam in a blender with some RIT dye, but I sure never tried to paint it. Sounds like a cool idea so I hope richardsushi shares some pictures and more detail about the process.
