Wabash Fallen Flags Passenger Cars...
Posted by howgreenfield on Wednesday, December 7, 2005 3:38 PM
Help!!!!! I have collected a complete Wasbash Fallen Flag Series, loco and passenger cars over the past year or so. My wife and I have recently moved into a home, and I have finally had the opportunity to unpack many of my trains. I discovered the 7227 Dining Car does not match the rest of the set...the striping and lettering is silver, not gold...that is, until I looked at the other side...Lo and behold, the opposite side is gold to match the set....
Does anyone out there have a similar issue? Do I have a factory error? Any value over and above, or below current book?
I do have the original box, and have looked at other pieces at shows, etc....My car appears to be original....
Thanx for your help....

Hi All,

Just a quick update, have contacted Lionel regarding paint, but they can offer no input...and no further suggestions......SOOOOOOO....I'm still looking for input, and I sure am going to hang on to this car.....Thanx for your replies, and looking forward to more input regarding this car....

HAPPY HOLIDAYS TO ALL !!!!

Have checked all other cars, and all are gold lettered and striped...Appears that I may have an error car...Any input would be greatly appreciated..Thanx, again...Howard

Hello Howard! Hang on to that Passenger Car! It sounds like you have a legitimate Factory Error. I imangine that it would definatley be worth something. If not now, then sometime in the future. I've never heard of any other factory variations in this set. Consider yourself fortunate. Take Care.

On page 68 of Terral Klaassen's and Roger Carp's article "The secrets behind Lionel's postwar black GG1s" in the December issue of CTT, they explain the occasional silver stripes on those locomotives as due to inadequate paint stirring, among other causes. Perhaps the same thing happened to your dining car.

The Lionel painting process typically spun the car body for each side to be painted. It is more likely the paint faded, possibly from being displayed in an area where it was in sunlight or overexposure to a fluorescent fixture.

There was a great film clip in the Discovery Channel show today (see my earlier post) of the Lionel paint booth operation showing the car bodies (passenger cars to boot!) spinning around after one side was painted so the other side could be painted.
