Front truck problem?
Posted by laz 57 on Sunday, November 13, 2005 9:21 PM
Hi GIZ,
I was running my new Lionel NPR Bershire 2-8-4 around my layout. When it comes out of 0-54 curves sometimes the front trucks (2) will jump off the tracks and too right after it goes into 0-42 curve it will jump. Any ideers how to solve this problem?

I have no idea if this applies to new stuff (my newest Flyer was made in '65) but I kept running into the same problem with a Flyer Pacific. I was going nuts with it until I finally noticed that one of the wheels was sliding on the axle, taking it in- and out-of-gauge. All I could think of was to re-gauge it and carefully put a tiny drop of adhesive on it. It hasn't jumped off-track since. Like I say, this is on an old used loco and have no idea if it is related to your situation with a newer Berkshire. BTW, I'm thinking of getting my son one of the Polar Express kits. How do you like it?

HUGO,
Thanks for advice,
The Berk I have is the scaled one. The Polar express isn't scale but everyone I know likes it and has good pulling power. I even was thinking of getting one for under the tree.

Laz, I had a similar problem with my K-Line Mikado. I increased the download tension on the leading truck. Instead of trying to stretch the spring, and maybe permanently screwing it up, I put a few washers under it. It took several trys to get the rite tension. [:o)]

Thanks GIZ,
I used your advice CHIEF. Don't know what we'd do without ya[;)]?
What I did was use two knock out from electrical box and taped them to the top side above the wheels. Ran GREAT at all speeds.
A BIG THANK YOU GIZ.
I knew somebody had this problem once before.

I have used washers for weight on the front trucks and I also put a dab of oil on or around the slot the front truck pivots/slides in to let it move around a little better too.
