new layout plans...tell me what you think?
Posted by Anonymous on Friday, September 30, 2005 1:35 PM
Its somewhere around 10x6 (give or take a few inches)
Planing to run two trains, one per loop. One postwar, and one
current. Going to have a 364 log loader, 362 barrel loader, 3656 stock yard
and a 3472 milk car / platform.

I would like to add sound, but not sure I need the full TMCC setup.
Is there any add one sound boards for steam that dosnt require the TMCC to operate? I want to be able controle my switchs by hand, and operate the accessoris with there own controler. I want to keep it simple. I have a KW that I plan to use at first to get the layout running, and a couple of smaller powerpacks to run the accessories and lights.

I think that is monotonous.
Please don't feel bad.

I was going to comment on this before the lockout. The plan is gone, so I'm baseing my comment on memory. The plan looks like typical toy train layout to me. Nothing wrong with that at all. I think I might like to add a dead end siding or two and if you have the room. consider conecting the outside oval with the inner one.

I'm also going from memory, but I think you have a basically sound design - allowances for two trains to run simultaneously without supervision, two reversing routes, and two short passing sididngs.

You might consider crossovers to allow the outer and inner routes to interchange. Basically, if you are happy with it and it does what you want, then go for it!

I'm going from memory, too. Agree with Dr.'s comment about the interconnect between the two mains. Also suggest that you run the figure eight (maybe a 45 degree crossing rather than ninety) off the inner main. This should free up enough space for some sidings. You might also consider an elevated line (recommend a non-oval approach) -- trolley or regular -- within the mains to add some variety. I've done this in a 8X10 space using basically O54 and 042 curves on the mains and something between O42 and O32 on the elevated (GG flex track all the way around). Add a couple of tunnels and a passing siding and you are in business.

I forgot to add a point -- put all sidings including the passing siding off the insides of the figure eight. This will allow you to operate two trains on the mains, one on the elevated line, and a switcher working the sidings and using the passing siding as a pickup/makeup track. You could even create a small yard with this setup but you would lose a lot of space for buildings and accessories as a result.

I agree you will like cross overs between the loops. I would put in two so you can cross over in either direction since you have double reversing loops in the figure *.

Here is a link that shows my main control panel. You see it has two loops and figure 8 and two cross overs between loops.

Not sure why the pic is no longer.....

Looking though Thor's web site, I think I found a layout I like better, I'l losse one track, but I think I'l gain more from it. Down on the end of the leg, I was thinking
about using an Atlas turntable and small roundhouse to hold my loco's

I asked a while ago, but cant find the post anymore, I'm looking to convert a couple of my p/w loco's to comand control, what were the sited that sold the boards to do the converson.
Thanks.

Now I like this one! Thor designs some good layouts.

You'll have a longer mainline run, more sidings and room for buildings and scenery, still have two train (or more!) operation and the ability to change direction of your train from either direction.

I like Poppyl's suggestion of an elevated loop. Plenty of room to add one here also.

The turntable and roundhouse would definitely add some interest and give you a great place to store your engines.

The elevated loop sounds like a good idea, Might have to play around with that
as I start track laying.

Very nice! This is a layout the post war kids of the 1950's and 60's would dream of!
