Make your nasty pole disappear forever!
Posted by FJ and G on Friday, May 6, 2005 1:54 PM
We just moved from Pentagon to Crystal City. While exploring the underground, I nearly bumped into this pole, which is camouflaged with a nice painting that resembles the background wall.

The chase is framed out round. Perfect, I thought, for you pole huggers who don't know what to do with the poles in your basement.

Whatever you do; DO NOT cut down the poles in your basement, as they are probably more than mere decoration. They might be holding up your house.

After you are done concealing your poles, why not go out back and plant some fruit trees. You can see several that I planted. BB the beagle will likely have fresh plums, cherries, pears and peaches to supplement her steak and rabbits.

Great idea. When I worked over across from the Pentagon the underground didn't have such a paint job. It must be new to the last couple of years.

Now, what will I paint on my basement pole to make it disapear? I was thinking of just making it sky blue, but now I might go crazy.

Naw

It's Ok to cut the "poles" called lolly columns in the Midwest. It will give you a much higher trains space.

Who uses the upper floors in a house anyway??

For those of you who do not already have a nasty, obtrusive steel column in the middle of your train room, are feeling left out and would like to purchase one, the correct spelling is "Lally" and is (or at least was) proprietary.

I know, I know. Get a life....

some time ago, a wag proposed eliminating the poles in his basement and pressurizing the basement so that the upper floors would hold up.

haven't heard from that gent in some time

I've got metal poles in my basement, too. I haven't done anything to conceal them, yet. Something I've thought is making them look like fancy pilars in some Greek temple. It would give an extra touch of class to the train room!

The easiest way to make them disappear is to clad them in mirror tiles.

It might lead to one of those embarrassing situations where you keep stepping from one side to another to let somebody pass, until you realise it's yourself coming the other way.
