What Bridges will be best for my layout ? ? ? ?

Hey Ya'll

I would like to build a layout on a table the size of a ping pong table, like the one at my church. It has enough space for a medium sized layout.

There will be to loops conneted by switches, a siding at the station, a 213 lift bridge, like the one on my grandfathers layout, a yard with a few accesories, a shed, and a big bridge spanning the big lake. [:D]

But, I am at a loss for what I shoudl use. I think I would like to MTH Hellgate bridges (have you seen those things, they are huge), or 4 lionel truss girder bridges. [:D] [:)] [?] [:)] [:D]

Do you think those are good? Which one should I use? Does anybody have any suggestions? [?]

Thanks [;)]

A standard ping pong table is 5x9 which is adequate for a nice layout. However, the Hellgate Bridge will take up a lot of space and will limit your track laying options greatly.
I would look at smaller bridges.

I don't think all of that will fit on a 5x9 ping-pong table. I'd go with a much less ambitious plan to start--you'll get something going a lot faster and be able to enjoy running trains without getting frustrated. I'm of the philosophy that it's better to build a layout within your financial means and your skill level, start enjoying the hobby, and then add another table and get more ambitious once you have some experience.

I saw a 3-lap oval plan over at OGR within the last week or two, based on the layout that from the Addams Family TV series. It used O36 track (you could substitute O31 or even O27) and maybe 5-6 switches and a trestle set. It would yield a good-looking layout without spending tons of money.

What's that old saying about the pipe calling the kettle black?

And, Bradley, just ignore those who are trying to say that you're someone you're not.

Make sure you reinforce the table, The ping-pong tables are very weak.

The Evil Doctor is in !!! If you are looking for a bridge, I have an old Lionel Bridge #317 or #321(have to look at it in basement) and a trestle set. I will be willing to give you a deal on the bridge & trestle set if you are interested. I got them at a yard sale with a Lionel set a few years ago. Was a deal! Email me if you are willing. That goes for anybody else. Till My Next Missive, I Remain The Humble, Yet Strangly Evil Doctor!!![}:)]

The Lionel 317 is a nice bridge. If you aren't interested in "collector quality" they can be had at a decent price. It's got a span of 24" For an even cheaper alternative, the Marx truss bridge doesn't look bad. It spans 18" though is much lighter weight tin. I picked one up at a meet for $5, then spray painted. Had to cut corners somewhere to get the layout up and running!

Marx repaint on the left, Lionel 317 on the right.

Good luck.
