Just received the new Lionel Railbox Boxcar with Diesel Trainsounds 6-36789 and I am not impressed. I know it cannot sound like Railsounds, but I do not think it is that great for 72 dollars. I wi***hey would bring back the Railsounds in boxcar setup. Everytime you change direction the trainsounds shut down. Also the diesel engine sound has only two speeds, plus idle. Oh well!

Noel

I haven't heard the diesel Trainsounds, but I have heard the steam tender and for the money, I was impressed. The varied crew sounds was kind of neat. The chuffing did seem to cut out when the whistle was blown, but for a "R-T-R" sound tender for traditional steam, does it really matter? MTH's "Locosounds" should sound so good..

For a little perspective, a Railsounds board for a "command ready" locomotive is $69, Railsounds boards for TMCC upgrades go for $80-$93. I think the diesel boards have idle and three levels of ramp up, and in conventional operation they require a battery to maintain sound during direction changes.

For an MSRP of $105 the Trainsounds price seems right.

Guys,
I just got notice that my "Lionel Railbox Boxcar with Diesel Trainsounds 6-36789" shipped FED EX Ground Monday. I will let you know how it works out for me, as I am somewhat meticulous too. I plan to run it with a MPC era Cross country Freight Set w/ its soundless TP&W GP-20. The next upgrade I plan for the locomotive is to replace the old mechanical reversing unit with a RU-101 ACRU-LP solid-state reversing unit from QSI. The cost of a little over $100 for both the sound car and the new reversing unit will really enhance this set, which I believe to be one of the nicest from the MPC era.

Just got my Railbox Boxcar with Diesel Trainsounds Friday. In short, it adds a lot to my otherwise soundless MPC Cross Country Set. The car frame is of a standard 6464 type, so I was able to swap boxcar shells with the TP&W boxcar that comes with the set. As for sounds it is true that there are only two engine speeds + idle. The horn is nice and clear but the bell is a bit on the weak side. If the train is in neutral with track power at least 6vAC the crew chatter kicks after a minute, to manually initiate crew chatter the train must again be in neutral and pressing the horn button starts the chatter. The one thing I did not like was that the horn would momentarily sound before the chatter. One I install a quiet QSI reversing unit I will be able to enjoy this baby even more. I give this car two thumbs up.
