Posted by Anonymous on Saturday, February 5, 2005 8:44 PM
Where is a good place to buy some 18v bulbs for the 022 switches. I need the bulbs for the controllers, screw base, red and green. Also the clear bulbs for the switches . I have both screw base and bayonet base on the switch. Thanks to all....Tim

I was actually thinking of trying the white LED approach that was published a few months ago. I can't remember which magazine had it, but I think there was some discussion here. I want to say it was in OGR.

There are some advantages to the LED conversion, including lower heat and lower current draw. They cost more, but they last longer.

If you think you want to try it, save the old bulbs, because you need the bases.

I don't need these for my home layout, but I use some 072 switches on my portable layout, and I have some burnt out bulbs, as well as some melted lanterns. When I take the show on the road, the hours are long, and those bulbs get hot.

If I recall correctly, Radio Shack has some 22 or 24 volt bulbs that will work nicely for the O22 switch. It make take some searching, but I'm pretty sure they have one that will work.

Higher voltage bulbs won't burn as hot(fewer melted lanterns) or as blindingly bright as will 14 or 18 volt bulbs when operated at command control voltages. They should also have a much, much greater life than most other things being run at that low of a voltage.
