Layout Photos-Work In Progress

The plan.

New Year's weekend 2005. got the wood cut, benches constructed and wiring for two lines of track in place. A good start!. Now I'll just be devoting an evening a week to the project.

Used 2" insulating styrafoam. Had to put the printed side up on one piece becuase I bashed an edge in transit. But that's why they make paint.

Well, I guess my framework wasn't really square. So when I put the tops on there were some gaps. After trimming the edges I used the slivers as fillers. Picked out ones that looked like they'd fit and applied some glue and put them in place. Worked well so far.

I've actually set up the track and put the structures in place, just to test the plan. I'll start wiring the blocks and lights over the weekend.

I'm kind of liking the layout. So after the wiring, I'll carve out the river, add ground cover and trees, then add some sheets of masonite along the back and paint a backdrop. The benchwork is made of 1 x 4's, and the foam top makes it very light, so me and my two boys can move it out from the wall when we work on it.

I'll keep posting as it progresses. Though I know it will never be "done".

That looks great. Really nice collection of buildings and accessories! Were those pieces you collected or family pieces you aquired? I'm a big fan of pre-war stuff but my pocket book is always shy when it comes to the big ticket items. Keep up the good work. A backdrop will really make your layout!

Hello,

Where did you get the prewar Flying Yankee??? I've been searching for one and a prewar Lionel "City of Denver" so I will have a prewar streanliner to run on my layout when I build it as I don't have room for 0-72 curves for my Prewar M10000 "City of Portland".

Thanks all! Good to get encouragement.

Bert and Mary- Got the Flying Yankee a few years back for about $400. Not perfect, but a good runner. I'm in the process of changing the vestibule power pick-ups from the flat metal strips to rollers I just purchased from Olson's. Should run a bit smoother and have a little less blinking of the lights.

Paul the Painter- I've picked up the buildings over the last 5 years or so. Most aren't in great shape as I generally put about $100 limit on something I'm going to put on a layout. The exceptions are the 115 station, which i recently got on ebay for $200 and the #97 coal loader which i bought at a TCA meet for about the same. I look around for buildings which have some imperfections which makes them undesirable to the shelf collectors; light fixtures missing, rust on the bottom, etc. I get light sockets from Radio Shack for aboiut $1 each and rewire them with those.

The Korber power station is a model I made last summer. I just love it as it looks just like the Edison station which I passed so many times as a kid. That end of the layout will have "scale" buildings, the other end will be tinplate, all seprated bu a river.

Any suggestions on names for the two towns?

Hello,

Thanks. When I find one and buy one, I'll try that, or if I don't think I can, I'll just have somone else do it.
