I appreciate the advice gents!  However any temp layout I set up won't have any switches, cross-overs, will have a minimum of 031 curves, and if there's a tunnel it'll be on a straight track.

That 6-18745 engine's interesting but a bit too funereal, if you know what I mean.  I've been to enough damn funerals in the past five years, an aspect of getting older no-one warned me about. Sad

Sorry, I don't mean to bum anyone out.  It's why I got interested in the Harry set, it's got the magic and mystery but without the gloom.

Morning all.

Sunny and 51* goimg to 58* todaay.

No real plans for today. Need to work on clearing the excess off of the train table so I can get ready to put carpet down for appearance.

I got thinking the other day ( yes that can be very dangerous ) my layout is about 3 1/2' off the floor. I know the sound goes down from the table, I plan to put carpet on top to help with the noise some but have always been told that the noise from the track will go down through the screws/nails. I basically have 4' x 4' framing under the plywood. I was wondering what if I stappled carpet to the 4' x 4' framing to like maybe catch the noise inbetween and muffle it from being so loud, Do you think it might work? I may get a little extra to try it in an area.

RT, I used this on top of the table before I installed anything. Put the rool grass on top of it and the layout is very quiet. 1/4" thick.

How does it do for walking on. I have to get up on my table to reach my trains that are on shelves. one side is about 30" wide and the top shelf is about 4' above that. the other side is 4' wide and also top shelf about 4' above table. Looks like an excellant idea otherwise. I'm also thinking maybe betting foam and cut to size of openings underneath and glueing it to bottom of table.

I honestly feel standard gauge is louder than O gauge.

Got 385E #1 with 385W in today. For an engine that is some where between 85 and 91 years old not in to bad shape, needs cleaning up, runs okay, a little slow but a cleaning probably would help that. Needs a spit clean and shine, The whistle in the tender seems to be the best actual standard gauge prewar working whistle. I can actually hear it from oppisite end of train table ( 16' away. ) Still want to open up and clean/lube it. I bought 2 of these one is this prewar, the other is MTH remake conventional and no whistle.

I used Pergo flooring planks, with the thin layer of styrofoam, for sub-roadbed. Turned bottom up, it sufficiently baffled all track noise. I purchased mine at a deep discount from Ollies, especially the packs that were opened up and loose planks.

Easier and neater to jigsaw then plywood. And certainly easy to transport home.

RT I don't walk on the table much but I have and it springs right back.

The key is when installing the track don't screw it down tight. Take it to snug then back it off a half turn and it will hold the track in place and the track ride up and down on the foam as the train passes overhead and not transfer noise through the screws to the table.Wink

Another weird day for March here,,,70 out there

Oh, heck yes!  Just think of it in terms of the special volume of the cars.  The 214 boxcar is a much bigger resonance chamber than a 655. Wink

And a 514 fall inbetween them in size. I do have the larger 200 serries but when running freight I usually run the 500 serries.

Evening,

I bought a Lionel TMCC Canadian National 2-6-0 mogul on eBay and it arrived today! I love it! (Despite the fact that I'm currently running it conventionally. I don't have TMCC or Legacy yet)

Congratulations!  From what I've seen it's a good-lookin' engine!

Running conventional?  A man after my own heart!  Bow

Today I had the pleasure (Sad) of having a lumbar puncture, also known as a spinal tap.  Why?  So they could draw off fluid and send it to the Mayo Clinic to see if I have chemical (?) signatures of narcolepsy and/or cataplexy.  MRI tomorrow.  Glowing in the dark on Wednesday.

It's not bad.  I could have lived without the needle in my back though Wink.  My MRI got postponed because they had some emergencies to deal with today so I don't have to do that until Monday.

Hopefully it will go well because I never knew how claustrophobic I was until they tried to squeeze me into a standard MRI machine.  I did an open MRI in 2005 without any problems, but the neurologist I had in 2021 insisted on using the high definition closed MRI machine.  During the first attempt I basically flipped out.  The second time they tried adding Benadryl, but since they didn't have me take it until I was walking towards the machine, it, of course, didn't do anything and I flipped out twice as fast.  The final attempt was under anesthesia but I went into respiratory arrest so they didn't get any data that time either.

This is a different neurologist and she has no problem with me doing an open MRI.  She just would like to be sure there's nothing obvious going on that could be causing my hypersomnia like a tumor or a serious vascular concern.  But since there's no reason to suspect anything like that she's perfectly happy if I can't do the test.

I'm trying all this stuff because after 20 years of guessing it would be nice to have a clear diagnosis and treatment plan.  Wink

Praying and hoping for the best out come for you Becky. on the MRI just think your on a train going through a tunnel. That has helpped me when I have to do it.

I learned I was clastrophobic when I was in Sub school. Not a good place to be going when your clastrophobic.

Oh wow.  Oh wow-wow-wow!

Let me tell you, if the Navy had battleships (or PT boats for that matter) in commission in the 1970s I'd have joined the Navy instead of the Marines!

21 days without a post?  Man, that is unheard of.  A few years back, we used to yak enough that we'd get 21 posts in a couple three hours.

Anyhow, I've got no train news to speak of, so I'll update y'all on one of the things that has been keeping me away from trains.  I am a mentor for the local high school's robotics team.  We've got 50 students on the team and field two robots in competitions.

Last weekend, we attended our third regional competition this year.  Turns out that the junior team won the competition, qualifying them for the world championships.  The Senior team won the first competition we entered six weeks ago, so we are taking both teams to the world championships.

The senior team is rated at #144 in the world and the junior team is rated at #177.  There are about 3500 teams worldwide.

This week, we are testing and tuning both machines to go to the world championships in Houston next.  There will be about 600 teams there.  Both robots are rated in the top 20 out of about 70 teams in each of their respective divisions.  The winners of the 8 divisions will then come together for some ranking rounds, then the final 8 alliance double elimination playoff for the world championship.

Hope all have a good weekend

These will be purple and gold/yellow once opened in next day or so

Cut grass yesterday, cleaned garage out :) now my small utility trailer and the Nova boot fit in there.

Plan to put a shelf above the double window at far end of train room, to store more trains on.

I drive down to Houston for the F.I.R.S.T. Robotics world final.  Both the underclass team and the upper class robots on the local high school robotics team I mentor qualified for worlds this year.

There were about 600 teams there competing in 8 divisions of about 75 teams each.  The winners of the 8 devisions then go into an 8 alliance double elimination playoff bracket th determine the World Champions.

The underclass team made it to the finals in their division, but did not win.  Really, a fantastic finish to the season for them.  The underclass team's purpose is to teach the younger students how to design, build, and compete with a robot.  If they do well in competition, that is a bonus.

The upper class team won their division and made it into the finals.  They won the first three matches in the finals, then a loss dropped them into the lower bracket.  They clawed their way into the world finals!  The final match is a best of three series.  They won the first match by about 10 points and the second match by 3 points to become WORLD CHAMPIONS!

The bus got a police escort and a water salute by the fire department when they got home.  Cheerleaders, the pep band, and local dignitaries greeted them as they came off of the bus.  The city is going to place 'Home of Team SCREAM World Champion' signs at the city limits.  There is a meeting scheduled with the governor, and the state legislature is going to pass a resolution about their achievement.  Seems that we are the first team from this state to win the World Championship.

Our goal going into the World Competition was to win our division and get the honor of playing in the finals.  We never expected that we would actually win them!
