Postwar steamer side rod identification
Posted by srcrager on Friday, April 14, 2023 2:53 PM

I ran in to an issue while working on a 675 steamer.  The drive rod that pushes on the smoke unit lever was not pushing the lever very much resulting an anemic smoke output.  I found another drive rod in my parts bin that was a little longer and when I notched the crosshead for clearance with the smoke lever at the end of the stroke I got a much better smoke output.  My question is can anyone identify the engine or part number for a 2 1/2 inch long drive rod.  The rh rod for the 675 is a 228e-3 and is 2 3/8 inch long.  I have measured a couple more (end to end):

2026 also 2 3/8

726 - 3 1/2

2056 - 2 7/8

but I can't find a match for my 2 1/2 inch rod.  Anyone know which one is that long?

Thanks,

Scott

225E-8

For all 224/224E, 225/225E, 226/226E, 2025, 2035, 675.

Are you saying the lh rod (-8) is longer? From what I can see they are the same length at 2 3/8 just reversed in detail.

Thanks,

Scott

Did some more research and it is getting more confusing.  I just received 2 2035's and measured the drive rods with my calipers.  On one, both the right and left rods measured 2.41 inches.  On the other engine the lh rod was the same but the right hand rod was 2.34.  I measured the rods on a 2037 I have and both came out at 2.34.   I also measured the rods on another 675 I had and it measured 2.41 for both rods.  The longer rod that I used in the first post above measures 2.53.  I looked online for some 225e-8 rods and where they showed a ruler for length, different ads showed different lengths.

It appears to me that there is a lot of swapping and mislabelling of these rods.  I did order some 225e-8 rods that looked like they measured around 2.5 inches to see how they fit.

The other mystery is if the 225e-8 is really about 2.5 inches long then the crosshead would have to be notched to fit with the smoke lever (or the smoke lever narrowed).  I can't believe that there is this much of a weird fitment in a 70 year old engine.
