I see these train sets a flea markets and with the cost of G Scale cars I think I could turn these into something viable

As long as you have decent trucks and couplers I am sure you can make something cool.

I used 3 Scientific Toys cars and a New Bright battery operated loco to create my own version of the LGB "Factory Train".  Unfortunately I have neither the train nor any photos of it.

Hi Folks,

I just finished a project where I took a cheap Amazon battery-powered loco and tender

https://amzn.to/3CmgjRB

then used a Lionel Thomas LionCheif loco's chassis for my very inexpensive LionChief set.  The video shows the loco running on a Raspberry Pi 4 B with Python code from Dagan Martinez https://github.com/Property404/lionchief-controller

I added code for IR sensors and a relay to throw a turnout/switch.

The set-up is temporary, just used for debugging the Python code.

I repainted and "doctored up" the loco, added the lantern and extended cab roof, and a few other details.

Take care, Joe
