Kalmbach hobby store PDF's

Has anyone bought the pdf "Collecting Postwar Lionel Steam Locomotives?"  Does it have info about maintenance or merely about how they were derived from prewar boiler castings, mods etc; I'm looking for info re disassembly and commonly required maintenance on the different types of motors and e-units.

I find the repair manuals don't give you step by step instructions. For example, the CTT issue of July 2013 about GG1 maintenance is far better than the Greenberg Repair and Operating Manual, which is basically just exploded views of the loco, but no step by step recipe for getting shell casting off to get to motor to lube or maintain E unit.

In addition to a publication re steamers, is there a diesel themed  publication with similar info re the "growler" motors in 2343 and vertical motors used in the early switchers, FM trainmasters, and later F3's?

I'm assuming you are referring to PDF #12, because #39 is about layouts. I looked through the document, and it isn't what you're looking for. The stories are all historical information, in most cases versions released year by year.

I have two suggestions for you. The first is to search on the Railroad Magazine index. This index was done in partnership with Kalmbach and includes hobby magazines from several publishers: https://www.rrmagazineindex.org

click on the "search" button if you want to filter by magazine specifically, or just type in your search terms to see results for all titles.

Lastly, you may wish to look at TM Books & Video. They have a series of You Can Do It videos that include maintenance projects on locomotives. See more in the CTT March/April issue Product news section, p. 14.

Let me second Rene on the TM Books & Video maintanance DVD's.  Reasonably priced and well worth it!
