Lionel I bought

Hi everyone, I bought this Lionel set Lionel New York Central Flyer train set  O27 Guage , found out afterwards that it came without rails so then bought some rail off eBa. Can yous please tell me what I got here , what I have to do to get it going ect. Basically is it a good starter set, I got it for my 5 year old grandson.

Your pics didnt come thru.  For this site, its best to use a photo hosting site such as imgbb or another site.   The NYC Flyer came in a couple versions, one with a 4-4-2 steam loco and the newer version had a 0-8-0 steamer.  Both are good starter sets, can run on both 027 and regular O gauge track(track is taller/heavier duty) or the current fastrak with the plastic road bed(which is noiser sound wise when running).   Menards if you have one of those where you live, carries more of the older tubular style O gauge track, more freight cars, some beautiful if a bit expensive buildings that are all lighted and already built.   Ceramic holiday buildings also work well with Lionel trains.   Mike

That was the first train set I bought for my older son. It and he are both 23 and very active at Christmas ;-)

From what I can see the tracks look pretty good, just some elbow grease and a Scotchbrite pad should be all you need to make them serviceable.  Just getting a good shine on the raiheads should be enough.

I'd be a little leery of using those old transformers though, what I can see from the photos doesn't inspire much confidence.

The young grandson is obsessed with my HO layout and his dad got him a battery operated around the tree set, I'm sure this will be a good starter for him. I really have to learn to read eBay descriptions before doing the final biddin, can't believe I didn't see the no rails included , and untested and box has water damage.

Yes the train kit came with a controller, the transformers came with the rails, I have my work cut out for me.

I'll tell you what, in my opinion those older starter sets are just about ideal being conventionally transformer controlled.  The new ones come with remotes and power packs.  Some like them but I'm a bit distrustful of electronics having worked with them for 30+ years.

The simpler the better, in my opinion anyway.  

By the way, a good thing to have is an electric meter, they're good for diagnosing transformer and track issues.  Most hardware stores will have them and all you need is an inexpensive basic one.
