Post War O gauge 1034 transformer replacement

Hi,

I am very new to trains and this forum.  My parents passed away and I discovered a bunch of Lionel trains and track that are post war 1940s-ish vintage.   Put some track together and was able to get power to one of the locomotives using a 12V transformer.  It didn’t really move the train, but tried and the train light lit.  My guess is that this was the transformer to power the village. 

The original 75W 1034 transformer is dead, no power to it when plugged in.  I am assuming that this is what is needed to run the train.  

All we want is to be able to run it around our Xmas tree for this year.  

Is there a modern transformer that will work for this purpose or do I need the original 1034?

Any modern AC transformer for O gauge trains will do the job, the Lionel CW-80, the MTH Z-750 or Z-1000, or any post-war transformer for that matter that's in working condition. 

Check with a hobby shop that's in your area that specializes in the train trade, they should have something on hand you can use.  

By no means do you need an original 1034.  

One more thing, if the trains haven't been used for a long time give them some lubricating.  Oil the wheel bearings and especially the bearings and gears on the engine.  A little goes a long way, no need to soak them.

Don't try to disassemble the engine if you don't know how it's done, anything you need to lube you should be able to reach without disassembly.

If you need to clean the track of any kind of rust or skuzz on the railhead use a Scotch-Brite pad, it'll work wonders.
