Lionel #448 Missile Firing Set

Hello,

Looking for assistance on the set up of the 6-24107 Missles location. It might sound strange but when looking at the photo on the box the missiles look close. Well I have it set up 7 inches away and the bounce off the roof. Am I missing something?

I have tried backing it back but not enough impact to trigger the car.

Any help is appreciate.

I believe the pictures we see of the missiles hitting the Target Car and causing it to 'explode' are literary license on the part of Lionel. I don't think there is enough energy in the missiles to cause the car to 'explode'.

the car normally just falls apart, you have to have the pin out that goes thru the car to hold it together. I have yet seen the mechanism to be the cause of it falling apart.

It looks like the fins of the missiles are hitting the roof to me.  I imagine you must have tried backing off just an inch or two already.  If the missles aren't heavy enough as is to make the boxcar fall apart, then adding a weight to each missle might have a big enough impact to do the trick.  It shouldn't be too difficult to modify each missile by drilling a hole and then filling it with a lead weight.  (You can probably buy extra missles on-line, if you don't want to modify the original ones.)

The missiles do have a weight in the top of them, and you can see it from the bottom looking up. These sets where never really designed right in my book, as I said the cars normally would just fall apart anyway, sometimes as you went down the track

Thank to those that responded back to my message.

This is what i have so far. The pin has been removed but to resolve the issue missles flying to high, I raised the rear platform with a pad of post-its of the missle unit to lower the angle and voila. It does what it was suppose to do.
