Removing wheels on the Lionel 50 Gang Car

Hello

I have a need to remove the wheels on my Lionel 50 gang car.  I do have a ST-311 wheel puller but it appears I am having trouble lining up the puller with the axle and behind the wheel.  Is this tool the correct tool for the gang car.

The wheel puller of choice is here. Wheel puller #2. Gets right behind the wheel and does not slip off or break the wheel flange.

Do not try to pull the wheel simply by tightening the puller; unless you're lucky, that may damage the puller or the wheel.  Instead, tighten the puller just a little, then tap gently on the end of the puller until it gets a little loose, then re-tighten, tap, and so on, until the wheel comes off.  The idea is to drive the axle through the wheel, bit-by-bit, not literally to pull the wheel off the axle.
