Cars Needed to Assemble a Work Train (O-Gauge Tubular Track)
Posted by Gulf Oil on Tuesday, March 3, 2020 10:50 PM

Am running O-gauge tubular track with O-31 curved pieces.

I have a nice collection of rolling stock with which to assemble a freight train (a Pennsylvania RR GG-1 electric locomotive, several box cars, a coal hopper, two oil tankers, a lumber car, a cable reel car, a caboose, etc.).

Am looking to assemble a work train. So far I have a steam locomotive with coal tender, a crane car, a searchlight car, and a work caboose. I need two-three more cars to fill out this work train.

I would welcome any suggestions you can offer (including Lionel item numbers).

When we take out a work train, we always have a gondola to throw stuff in, and a caboose to protect our backwards movements.  If your O-31 crew is doing track work, need new ties, and a ballast car.  If it's gonna be an all day venture, better bring the bunk car.

Flat cars are always welcome. If it's a steam crane, consider a tender for it: modify an orphan tender to have a knuckle coupler in place of the drawbar. If it's a diesel crane, maybe about a tank car for fuel. In any case, a tank car for water; look for one of the small tanks on a flat car..
