Dealing with tubular track noise, an autistic's way of enjoying tinplate trains
Posted by emdmike on Friday, October 11, 2019 1:56 PM

I am autistic, with very sound sensitive hearing.  I would rather not have to wear my ear muffs while enjoying my trains. This has been a challenge in regards to 3 rail trains.  The newer Fastrack is horrible for noise as has been well documented, but it looks great. However I found a work around that is affordable and looks good.  A company called Johnsons made a rubber roadbed that mounts to the ties of good ol tubular Lionel track. This cuts the noise level to the same, IMHO, as running the track on a carpeted floor.  While its out of production, there is plenty to be found online via a quick google search.  It also helps keep the track from "creeping" on a wood table top or floor as well as catching any oil/grease flung off exposed gearing.  I have found it offered for 031, 042, 054 and even 072 curves, along with 027 and American Flyer track.  Here is a pic of my Bassett Lowke mogul sitting on the Lionel track with the rubber roadbed.  Hopefully this layout will look much more presentable thru the coming winter!   Mike

Wasn't a question Roger, but thanks for the reply.  The rubber roadbed is how I solved the excessive noise of running on a wood table top.     Mike the Aspie

Roger yes you have answered why you ask for a phone call BUT without adding something positive to the post it is becoming annoying. Oh and I'm not the only one that feels this way.

Roger. ..I agree. Your request is usually the end of the thread. Unless I've missed it none of your requests have made the magazine. Instead of getting the help he's looking for the question never gets answered.

I live in an apartment with hardwood floors. I'm looking for Johnsons roadbed for my O track for the same reasons. Unfortunately Johnson is closed and they have stopped making it. Anyone know where I can get a box of O31 straits?
