Got an old lionel set from my uncle

Has a broken GP unit that should be a quick fix along with a milk car and lots of track that is sadly mostly rusted. This weekend or next I'm going to start taking a look at everything and see how much work it really needs

Sounds like a fun fix up job, just in time for holiday layouts.  Most all parts are out there and tubular track is very cheap to find second hand.  Don't waste time on badly rusted stuff.      Mike the Aspie

That username looks familiar.. are you on the MRH forums?

Lionel made some very fine trains during the postwar years. Most of them aren't too difficult to repair once you've familiarized yourself with the components. I bought TM Books & Videos' guide to repairing and maintaining lionel trains back when I was around 12-13, and through the video, plus some trial and error, I got pretty good at doing my own repairs. The classic GP7/GP9 Lionel made in the postwar days was fitted with a single "Pullmor" motor, an E-Unit, and usually came with magnetraction as it came with a lot of nicer sets. My favorite GP-9 lionel made is the 2346 and 2359 Boston & Maine, the railroad used to run in my area (bought out buy Guilford Transportation Industries in the '80s, rebranded as Pan Am Railways in 2005) and their classic 'Bluebird' scheme for the Geeps always has a place in my heart.
The lionel milk car is an ingenious piece of engineering- It's a lot of fun to watch. It can be a bit finicky, and won't deposit every can the right way up, but with some careful cleaning and tuning up you'll likely get it going again!

As for track, I reccomend that if the track is O27, it's probably not worth cleaning up if it's got rust damage. Any electronic switches are well worth fixing up. If it's "Standard O", or "Super O", it is definitely worth a shot to save it. Especially since they don't make Super O anymore, and haven't since the mid '60s.
I've had good results using Evapo-Rust to remove rust from things. I highly reccomend giving it a try to see if it'll work for your needs!
Best of luck,
El
