I am considering buying a MRC Pure Power AC transformer. This is the big one with the large red conrol handle. 120 watts, I think. Anyone have experience with these?

I own the Dual 270 version, just got it this past summer. I used it on my Christmas layout this year in conjunction with DCS. I used it to power trackage controlled by VAR1 and VAR2 off of the TIU. It performed beautifully.

There was always at least 2 trains under its control. At times there would be 2 PS2 engines controlled by one handle and another PS2 engine controlled by the other handle. It easily handled these 3 engines -each with dual can motors.

I also used the fixed output to power 12 K-Line O27 switches.

I don't own an ammeter and I really enjoyed being able to see the AMP readings. The volt meter was OK but I didn't use it except for once when I was doing some debugging. In fact, I used the ammeter to help debug a problem that I was having with an engine that my brother brought over to get 'debugging' help with!

As many have wished, I too wi***hat the meters were lit. It would have been a bonus on top of what I think is an excellent transformer.

MRC has been around for along time and has made excellent quality stuff. I use their stuff in the 60's in N scale, 70's in HO and always respected their stuff as top of the line.
I would use the new dual power one if I didn;t have the lionel Z's powering everything on the layout.
Dave.
