Removing GULF decals without damaging paint underneath
Posted by CNW Lover on Monday, July 8, 2019 4:51 PM

I have an American Flyer GULF tank car that I'd like to change to CLARK.  However, I need ro remove the GULF decal before I can apply the CLARK decal in its place.

I don't want to strip the car down completely, but would like to keep the silver paint on the car.

Is there a way to safely remove the GULF signs without damaging the silver paint underneath?

Thanks for any help you can give me.

You might be able to pull them up a bit at a time with scotch tape.  I've never tried it intentionally, but I have done it accidentally.  FYI, there's a good chance the color under the decal will differ from the rest of the car due to ageing.

Trains, trains, wonderful trains.  The more you get, the more you toot!  Big Smile

Attempted to contact you using your website "contact the editor" page, but it locked up.

If you could include the information / process here, I'd appreciate it.  I'm extremely hard of hearing so don't like to call as I only understand a fraction of what is being said.

Thanks so much for understanding.

Thanks to everyone who replied to my post.

Strangely, I was able to remove the GULF decals by putting a wet kleenex over them and letting them sit for a bit before scraping them off with my finger nail.

Came off nice and easy with no damage to the paint underneath.  And, luckily, the paint under the decals is not discolored so putting on the CLARK decals I want to make should be easy and (I'm hoping) will look great.

Again, thank you!

Ed
