I own a Lionel 8040 steam engine and I'm looking for a parts list or exploded diagram of the engine, plus any instructions on how to pull the engine, clean and lube it. Are there any particular web sites to go to to find anything on an #8040? I found nothing on the Lionel site. Thank you for any help you can provide
Titan,
The parts list is located in this Lionel Supplement #1-9 which covers 1970 through 1986. This is located in the Service Documents area (https://www.lionelsupport.com/service-documents/) under Product Supplements.
https://www.lionelsupport.com/media/supplements/Supplement1to9/1Complete.pdf
Massive file (73 MB) and 500 pages. The 8040 is on pages 117-118 of the PDF.
I did not have any luck locating a user manual on Lionel's site (loco was made in 1970), but the supplement shows the mounting screws and one should be able to use this info to disassemble the loco.
Regards, Roy
Remove the 2 drive rod screws and take out the drive rods and crossheads.
Take out the 2 screws holding the front truck in place. Take out the screw on top of the boiler, and the entire motor assembly should come out of the boiler.
Next, take out the 2 screws holding the brushplate in place being careful not to lose the brushes.
Clean the copper commutator face of the armature, the bruhes and brush holder with Naphtha. Clean all the wheels and roller pickups with Naphtha also. Lube the gears with grease, and lightly oil the armature bearings and axle bearings.
Once everything is clean, reassemble the loco and test run it.
