ps-1 sound
Posted by CB&Q on Thursday, December 30, 2004 7:08 AM
[?] when you leave reset does the chuffing etc sounds have to be at a certain voltage before it starts. its been a long time since i've run ps-1engines. yes the batt is charged up sounds are on in reset they just quit after leaving it but start after volts get higher. this is a k-4 steamer also smoke unit not that good it used to smoke well last time I had it fixed the fan was stuck is there a cure-pemanent. also has anyone tried the digital dynamics board that just plugs into existing ps-1 board I think this might be a better way for me to upgrade ps-1 locos as it retains original sounds that I like. does it work like they say?? also does it work from TMCC after the new board is in place or do you have to buy aTMCC board as well?? thx ST paul out

HI Paul,

I have one at home, I will have to check it. It seems to me, as I recall, the chuffing sounds starts about the same time the engine starts moving.

Do you know the model number of your engine? The one I have is one of the first PS1 MTH made.

As for the fan, if you remove the boiler casting and then remover the 4 screws from the smoke heater board, you will have access to the blower fan. It is a nylon fan pressed fit on the motor shaft. Just pull it up a little. They sometimes bottom out on the casting.

Can’t help on the TMCC part. I am sure Richard will.

Hi the engine #is5495 its the first k-4 mth made with ps-1. I forgot to ask if a ps-1 hasn't been used in 1 1/2- 2 years can you put it on track & put it in reset& let batt charge for awhile to see if its still good or will it scramble the boards?? thx paul

HI Paul,

I think that the same one I have.

Yes you can charge the battery by placing the engine on the track and truning up the voltage to about 16 volts (I think ? I personally use a charger)

Do NOT Take the engine out of Neutral. It MUST remain in Neutral or you WILL scramble the board.

Also turn OFF the smoke (switch under the engine). IT takes 6 to 8 hours for it to charge.

Yes!

Works all TMCC functions while retaining orginal sounds.

If your loco does not start chuffing right away there is a re-set option at position 27 on the proto one.
I tried digital dynamics board and everything work ok except the chuffing. I have it all set up in normal mode perfect and it would not start chuffing until it had moved down the track about a foot.
I also have ucub 2 and it does the same thing, but will work fine on diesel which has the engine sound going as soon as it comes on.
Dave.
