Lionel FT & Geep Can Motors? - what type?
Posted by FEClionel on Wednesday, December 29, 2004 1:06 PM
I want to purchase a new Lionel Diesel and I've seen some good prices on the newer style FT's and GP9/7/38's. I was wondering if the can motors used are similar to those in late 80's style in truck design or if they are vertically mounted. Also how do they compare to the old Pullmors? I really like the FT's even if they don't have the best detail - I just want a quality set - I already have plenty in truck motor alco's - I don't want anything else like that - too much noise.

I have the B&O FT's, AA pwrd+dmmy #18169, from i believe the 2000 catalog. The best thing was it was command upgradeable which I did so now I'm a BIG BELIEVER in TMCC as opposed to running only conventional. As you stated the detail leaves a lot to be desired but as far as running they are hard to beat. The powered A came with dual vertcal can motors and traction tires and seem to do a real good job with pulling a load. They are geared pretty low so they won't set any speed records but that does help with ability to pull. Now how these compare to the newer FT's, such as the Burlingtons I've seen in the CTT ads, I couldn't say although I don't believe the newer ones are upgradeable to TMCC with the addition of the TMCC board. I believe it is a much larger undertaking to upgrade.

Does anyone know if the burlington is TMCC upgradable. Also size wise are they comparable to postwar F3's. I have never seen or have the ability to see the FT's in person since no one has them here in South Florida(I will be ordering from Charles Ro).

Anything is upgradable to TMCC... Its just how easy. Some can 'plug and play' where you can just pop the TMCC card in and go... others rewire the whole speal.

FT's and current F3's are listed at 26" for the A-A set, while PW F3's were listed at 26 1/2".

Real FT-s were 95' (23.75" for 1:48 scale) between the fronts of the pilots, while real F3's were 100.25' (25.1" for 1:48 scale).
