Bulb Dye
Posted by Curmudgeon on Wednesday, October 31, 2018 3:08 PM

My local crafts store hasn't a clue.

My pike is getting closer (acually runs both mains), signal bridges and cantilevers going in and wired to Tenshodo points.

But, some of the bulbs are......poorly colored any more.

I have an OLD bottle of green, so I'm good there....but red and yellow?
Bottle I have looks like an old small perfume bottle, brush in cap.

Somebody has to have had this issue in the last 60 years or more.

I just push the bulbs through a piece of paper and spray paint them.

Try Tamiya X-24 acrylic clear yellow and X-27 acrylic clear red.  Hobbylinc has them for $2.72 for 3/4 ounce bottles.  Although the sample color on the website looks like hot pink, in reality it's definately red.  See the aircraft beacon lights on the tops of my tall buildings here in the background:

It works well and all you have to do is dip and let dry.

Trains, trains, wonderful trains.  The more you get, the more you toot!  Big Smile

Yes those paints are fine if you want see through bulbs.  Rattle can paints make solid colors.

A quick way to get the see-through look is to use colored Sharpies. I go over the bulbs a couple of times.
