Lionel Maersk Maxi-Stack
Posted by ldabigdawg on Tuesday, December 28, 2004 8:11 AM
If anybody has been paying attention to E-BAY lately, you already know that the price for the Lionel Maersk Maxi-Stack has gone thru the roof. I was lucky enough to get the set and an extra maxi-stack before the recent price surge. I would like more cars however, so i was thinking of taking my spare N&W Maxi stacks and converting them to Maersk. I figure i could get Home Depot to match the paint color and I could spray paint the well cars. My question is, How do I go about reproducing the Maersk Graphics and lettering? Does anybody know of a company that would sell lettering like this? or of a way to put the lettering on the painted cars, or should i just leave the cars painted blue with no lettering?
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Just out of curiousity, what is the Maersk set going for now? I have this set with the engine only being "test run". The set cars, extra maxi-stack, and two flatcars w/tractors & trailer frames have never been out of their boxes. I have thought of thinning my collection out again and if I did, this would be one of the items I'd consider selling.

If you do an Ebay search for Lionel Maersk, you will find a set that is being offeed for $2500 and another that is up to $1800. those are minnt still sealed in the box. just the maxi stack add on is going for $480.

Those are crazy prices, just like the Polar Experss. In this case the demand may be that people want to make really long trains of these cars. This kind of thing has happened many times before, and eventually the bubble bursts, and the prices collapse. Be patient, unless you have money to burn.

Who knows, K-line or MTH could come out with their own versions of Maersk. Personally, I like the scale cars better anyway.

In the meantime, painting your own is an option. That color Maersk uses looks pretty close to Krylon's baby blue. As for the lettering, look for water decals. Check Microscale, the may have some O scale. There is also a way to make your own using your computer printer.

That is a neat looking train. I like the ones at shows where someone will have like 20 coal cars or a long "tank train"

Thanks Big_Boy, i i will check out microscale. Worst case scenario I might get a Brother P-Touch label printing machine with a clear backround tape. it wont be perfect or prototypical but i think it will look nice as an add on and allow me to run a nice 10 or 12 car train of maxi stacks.

BTW, I am counting my blessings, as I got the Set for under $500. and an aadd on Maxi Stack for $150. i feel sorry for somebody if they are speculating and trying to horde these units.
