Yesterday I made what is the longest drive I have even done to pick up a train set and train supplies. I live just north of Indianapolis, IN, so this is the starting and ending point of the journey. I drove to far north eastern Ohio, Kent, to pickup rail and ties for my 7.5 inch gauge ride on railway I am slowly building in my back yard. Then I drove clear down to Ft Thomas, KY, which is just acrossing the river from Cincy. There I picked up a Lionel 2332 GG1 set with many of the original boxes off the original owner. I had been looking for an affordable 2332 for awhile. Even with all the driving, neary 14 hours on the road total, the diesel fuel I burned in my pickup was less than the cost of having that rail and ties shipped to my house. I gave $300 for the set pictured below, not a factory set but one that the local hobby shop made up for the gentlemans father right before his son was born. Its been in thier family till yesterday when it joined my family. Its been packed away in thier heated basement garage for decades. Everything in clean, track is rust free, two of the freight cars are old wood All Nation or similar kits with Lionel trucks on them. The GG1, RW and the 3 passenger cars have their original boxes. For someone on the autism spectrum, it was a long and tiring trip, espically in construction and rush hour traffic. But I am pleased with myself for making the effort. Rainy and yucky outside here today, so gonna service the GG1 and give her a good run! Mike the Aspie

And, everyone needs a good excuse to get out of the house for a while for a road trip. I'll be making one myself in a few weeks, and there WILL be train shop raids involved!

The GG1 is on my radar ,as well.The one I saw last week was a 2332, single motor job for $275, no box. But all the stripes were intact. As were the pans.
I hope to find a deal like you got !

You can just see the stripes and lettering if you look at mine real close. A restoration of the stripes might be in its future at some point.

Nice purchase, Mike! The road trips are sometimes as fun as the purchase itself.
Sat down at the work bench, did a quick relube, polished the shell with Pledge and a soft cloth, same for the pair of 2442 pullmans and the 2443 obs. Runs like its brand new, only some very minimal E unit sticking and I do mean minimal. All lights work and the sets RW works better than my other one that needs some internal parts replaced due to wear(wont always return to zero power, I will fix that when I see my parts man this fall). Caught the 2332, nice and shiny, unloading passengers this evening. Even the coaches are shiny, this is when workers took real pride in thier work, no matter how dirty it was.
Looks great, and I see you didn't waste any time putting it to work!
