How can I tell if a transformer will work if to forward and reverse a train if I don't have a track set up and at an auction or store?
I do have a inexpensive meter, but don't know what I'm testing for.
Will all Lionel transformers work for all post war trains?
Thank you
Welcome.
I figure you are new here.
You should really post in the Model Railroader Electronics DCC forum.

If you ever fall over in public, pick yourself up and say “sorry it’s been a while since I inhabited a body.” And just walk away.
Thank you for the guidance. Yep, new to this with post war 40's/50's
by the way....how do i find it ???
On the opening page on the TRAINS site, select the heading "BROWSE OUR FORUMS" to see the various forums listed. Since you mentioned Lionel, you might want to check in at "CLASSIC TOY TRAINS" as well as "MODEL RAILROAD".
By the way, if you are talking about the basic Lionel trains, as I recall, reverse was achieved by just powering off and on. A solenoid in the locomotive would alternate directions. We may not be talking about the same thing, so don't take my word as absolute.
Oh, and I think the transformers were all compatible. I used Lionel and Marx transformers with each other's trains.
