Is It A Question Of Power
Posted by dougdagrump on Sunday, December 26, 2004 11:12 AM
I have two D&H C-420's, #412 and 411, both with TMCC and RS. The problem is when I try to set them up in a lash-up. Individually they will run like a champ but if I put both on track for set-up I get nothing out of them. It is just a small ceiling run with no extra power drain. I use a Lionel TW transformer, mainly I use this to do prep work to run somewhere else.
Any thoughts or suggesstions? [:(][%-)]
P.S. Was very busy past two days so I just wanted to wish everybody a belated but heart felt MERRY CHRISTMAS.

Not sure what to tell you here.

Dougdagrump,

A belated Merry Christmas to you and your family!

Have you tried putting them on the track at the same time, but separated and unconnected. Try to run them as the lash up and see if they move together or are they actually fighting each other because one is trying to run in the opposite direction?

It would also help if you post exactly the CAB1 sequence you programmed into the lash-up so we could examine and possibly comment.

Regards,
Roy

After confirming the eng ID#'s, one at a time of course, I put both of them on the track not connected to each other so I can do the lash-up routine. But they will not respond to start-up initiation or anything, they act as if there is no power to the tracks yet if I turn off the power and remove one the other will start rite-up after power application and the start-up sequence. DDG,

Is the load of the two locos somehow dragging your TW output down to a low voltage?

Do the locos even light up? Can you put a lighted caboose on at the same time to see what happens when you add the second loco to the track? Do you have a voltmeter you could test with?

I think Roy's right about the voltage. If you don't have a voltmeter, you need to get one![:)]

Although nominally rated at 175W, the TW actually is two separate 90W transformers, one variable and one fixed, in a single case. Each coil is rated for 60W continuous at 5 amps, which implies a voltage of 12V.

If you're running TMCC at 18V, you might try backing the voltage down to about 14V to see if the TW can keep up with the power demand.

I don't know what it was but I tried again this morning and it worked just fine. [:D]
