Newbie Questions
Posted by carney2 on Monday, January 29, 2018 12:06 PM

I've owned O-Guage trains for most of my life, but have never had the space to set them up.  We are downsizing and, unbelievably, I will suddenly have almost unlimited space for a train layout.  Since I haven't been involved with trains in almost 50 years, my questions are basic - and endless.  Starter kit:

I know absolutely nothing.  What books should I be reading and/or what videos should I be watching?  I will be attending a local train meet in a few weeks and hope to stock up on "how to" information.

What do I need for a starter tool kit?

I have a lot of O-Gauge engines.  Only one is pre-1996/97, so all have some sort of "modern" electronics.  About half are Lionel, and the others are Sunset Third-Rail.  Some years ago I was given a new-in-box Lionel Trainmaster Command Set CAB-1 Remote and Command Base.  I assume it is around 2000 vintage.  Is this sufficient for DCC, or am I getting way ahead of myself here?

Thanks for listening and you haven't heard the last from me.

First welcome. Second DCC is for MTH trains, Lionel run on TMCC or Legacy. Now for that to control your engines it has to have one or the other electronics in it. If there still in there boxes they should say Command Equipt.

Take it slow. The train meet might be good especially if you can find some from a local club there. They would be your best help if that is there.

Welcome to the hobby. Glad to have you. Big Smile First for information your best bet is our forum host. Click the trains.com sites link at the top of this page and emjoy.

As for your layout, you will need a transformer to power everything. Look for a nice rebuilt Lionel ZW transformer to get you started. That will control 2 of your first trains at once. Once you have that up and running you can deploy the TMCC set you have and use remote control with the trains that you have that are so equipped.

Good luck and welcome!

Welcome aboard!  If you're starting out with no knowledge at all I'd suggest cliking on "Resources" on the top right of the webpage, then "Shop."  Select "Books" and go on from there.

If your local hobby shop (which can be a real fount of knowledge, by the way) doesn't stock any of them you can order them direct from Kalmbach.

I believe TM Books and Videos has DVD's geared toward the beginner as well.
