I am new to this forum. Just thought I would inquire if there is anyone out there in or near the Shorewood, Illinois area, that has knowledge of train wiring experience, that would be interested in assisting me in wiring a Command Control system to my MTH Z4000 transformer. Serious responses only please.
Thank you, REA EXPRESS 5047
I'm in Illinois but Shorewood is a bit distant for me from the northern Chicago suburbs. Are you spending more time in the hobby? You may want to consider joining the TCA. They have meets in Addison every month and I would bet you could track down a member nearby that could help.
As for your problem, You are interested in adding a Lionel Command Control to your Z4000 powered layout? Is that because you are looking to opperate Lionel TMCC equipped engines? Or are you looking to remote control traditional postwar engines?
Adding TMCC is fairly easy. You purchase a command base and CAB 1 and connect it to the outside rail of the layout, if thats what you are intending to do. Write back and the group can help.
I Live in Marseilles about 35 miles west of you. Our daughter lives in Shorewood off River road south of Rt 52 and I lived in Plainfield for 53 years so I am close.
I do not run Command control but as I understand it it is a easy install from what I have seen and I would think, not anything would not be the same wiring with a Lionel ZW or a Z4000.
Our layout in Marseilles is 27 x12 out here but runs conventional PW trains. As for the rest of the wiring it would be the same.
PM me if you want.
The drive to Addison from you or me is a pain I don't care to travel, but then I am 65 and retired.

THIS COMMAND BASE, AND CAB 1, IS IT LIONEL OR MTH ? YES, I HAVE 2 UNITS THAT ARE LION PLUS, AND AM INTERESTED IN PURCHASING A PROTO-SOUND 2/3 UNITS AS WELL. WILL THE ABOVE HANDLE ALL UNITS ? LIKE I SAID, I'M NOT ELECTRICAL SAVVY. BIGAL956, I APPRECIATE YOUR ASSISTANCE. JERRY
Jerry, I tried to reply to an e-mail that showed up in my in box but like most with this sites software it did not work. How it got to my in box from you in the first place is a big??? Never showed up in my PM messages here??
Are you retired or working? I never know when I will be heading to the daughter's place.
But if you give me your phone number in a PM I could call you the next time I know I will be over there and maybe stop at you place and try to help you out some. Where are you in Shorewood?
Anyway I sent you a PM try to PM me again. I was in Shorewood yesterday.

HOW DO I GET INTO THE TCA GROUP ?
Okay you say lion plus do you mean lionchief Plus? if so your command unit will not run it. It also will not run any MTH/Railking engines. Your Command unit you have if it's a cab1 system all it takes is a wire from the command unit to the u on your transformer and then a wire from the U on your transformer to the outside rails of your track. and a wire from the A on your transformer to the center rail. That will connect your Command set. Now doing so you need either command equipt engines or legacy engines by Lionel.

The "Command Base & Cab-1" are Lionel products and will only operate locos equipped with TMCC electronics, again a lionel product originally for Lionel but licensed to other train makers as well. It will not operate any of the LionChief or Lionchief Plus engines.

If you are looking at adding some Proto2 and/or proto3 you can operate them with just your Z4000 transformer in a convential mode but you will not be able to get all of the functions that the proto2 or 3 control systems offered by MTH. For optimum use of the MTH Proto2/3 system requires the installation of the MTH DCS equipment.

Hope this helps.
