A slant on an old post. For some of our accessories, we are using a Bachmann Hobby Transformer designed for HO and N scale trains.

Model 6607 - 120v 50/60 HZ Output  17 VDC 20 VAC Max Output 7 VA Total

Would like to replace it with a vintage Lionel transformer. Have a couple. #1026 Type marked with secondary voltage 7-15v and #1015 Type marked with secondary voltage 9-14v.

 *Don't have a meter and and when it comes to electrical stuff, I am "brain dead".

Question: The Bachmann transformer automatically sends out the power to the accessory terminals when it is plugged in. The Lionel transformers have throttles with scales.

Where should the throttle be set?

It varies with different accessories. 12 - 14 volts is a good starting point. Do not trust the markings on the throttle. You should measure the output with a multimeter.

Not all Lionel transformers have adjustable power only. The KW, TW, and the 1033/44 have fixed 14-18v outputs for accessories.

Transformers like the ZW with adjustable outputs are great for vibrating or motorized accessories because you often need to adjust the voltage to get them just right. Lights and other accessories often need just 14v fixed. My 022 switches work best on 18v.

Thanks, guys. (Not as simple as I thought!) Guess I have a couple of choices: Leave them as they are -" If it ain't broke, don't fix it " OR Get one of them Multi-meters and work it out. Got to luv this hobby.

The appropriate voltage for an accessory is liable to differ between AC and DC.  Incandescent lamps and heaters won't know the difference; but electromagnet, relay, and solenoid coils will draw less current from an AC supply than from a DC supply at the same voltage.  Since their magnetic fields are proportional to current, they will probably need AC voltage somewhat higher than the DC that they work well on.  Some things, like vibrators, will work only on AC; and others, like permanent-magnet motors, only on DC.

Bob and all: Neighbor used his meter on my Backmann. It showed 19.5  Then used it on the Type 1015, it showed 14.6 and on the Type 1026, it showed 14.6. Both at full throttle.

Will probably split up the accessories between them and see how we do.
