Can I run a Lionel 8769 on my ZW powered layout? I get conflicting answers online.
It appears to be DC only. A quick way to find out is to try a regular AC Lionel transformer. If the motor chatters quickly shut it down. It's DC. Or just look inside if all you see is a motor it's DC. For AC it would have an E-unit board in there.

The service manual shows only a DC motor.
To run on AC power, a full wave bridge rectifier would need to be installed. This will allow you to run it, but only in one direction. To get reversing capabilities, an electronic reverse board would need to be installed.

My militayr switcher of the same kind needed a bridge rectifier and it worked fine, but as said, only in one direction.
They are not worth much but you could get a newer one fron the dinosaur set and swap the body.

You can pick them up for less than it would cost to up-grade and get all the other stuff as well.

Thanks for all the info! I needed a small switcher for the small O guage layout and that looked like it would do the job. I'll find something else.
In that case look for one of Lionel's little Docksiders, it's a good engine and they won't bust your budget. And you get a whistle.
